Weather quieting down ahead of an expected weekend cold front

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The threat of heavy showers has diminished for now as an upper level disturbance weakened  overnight.

The National Weather Service cancelled a flash flood watch that had been posted for Maui County and the Big Island of Hawaii.

The wet weather was being caused by an upper level disturbance centered southwest of the Big Island. It is forecast to continue weakening and to move away from the islands.

Oahu is on the fringes of the system, but could see some scattered showers from it. Kauai will be left mostly dry.

The system earlier left a blanket of snow atop Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Light snow accumulations and flurries were forecast for the summit areas overnight.

Drier weather is in the forecast for Thursday, but another front is bearing down on the islands and may make for a wet Super Bowl Sunday. Winds will become light and then turn southwesterly as the front approaches. We will continue to fine-tune the forecast so you can plan appropriately for your football gathering.
