Former KHNL/KGMB anchor Lyle Galdeira dies

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Former Hawaii television anchor/reporter Lyle Galdeira died Monday morning following health complications at a Honolulu hospital.

A friend tells Hawaii News Now that Galdeira had trouble breathing last night and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The cause of death is not known at this time.

His son Kyle released the following statement: "Just hours before his passing, Dad and I shared laughs over a few episodes of Seinfeld--one of our favorite shows (which, ironically, is on TV in the background as I write this). I believe it is that infectious laughter and booming voice that he would want all those that knew him to remember as we endure this rough time. And, fittingly his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, posted a huge win that evoked a big fist pump from Dad. It still brings me great honor and pride when folks all over the state mistake me for him...it always allows me the opportunity to say, "Yep, that's my Dad."

Galdeira was Chief Political Reporter for three Hawaii television news departments, and has anchored morning and evening television newscasts.

In 2005, Galdeira left KHNL after a 30-year career in broadcasting. He was the host of the popular "Cheap Eats" and Does it Work segments on KHNL-TV.

"We'll always be a team.  When people stop me to ask about Cheap Eats, they always ask about Lyle.  In my 18 years in television, some of the best times I ever had was with Lyle and Darin Akita shooting those Cheap Eats segments.  I'm going to miss him terribly," said friend and Cheap Eats co-host Russell Yamanoha.

Lyle was born and raised in Honolulu he went to Punahou School, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Pacific University in Oregon.

Galdeira has been working since 2006 as a realtor for Prudential Locations.

Galdeira was 59-years-old.
