Meet Hawaii's champion figure skater
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Jennifer Jones is well aware of the irony of her life.
"They'll say 'representing the Hawaii Figure Skating Club, and they'll say your name…and it's always [said like] a question".
That hasn't stopped her from dominating the fledgling sport of Showcase figure skating.
"It came to about 10 years ago as a recognized national sport, and it fuses figure skating with theater" she explained.
In the sport, competitors skate in three different disciplines: light entertainment, drama, and improv, where skaters must come up with a routine, just minutes after hearing the music that has been chosen for them.
"They're going to play a song you may or may not have heard..it could be rap, it could be rhapsody in blue".
Jones not only competed in, but took home gold in all three categories at the recently completed National Championships. That brought her career total to 37 medals in the span of a decade.
Jones says she'll compete at Nationals one more time before returning to work full time at the Ice Palace, where she's a skating instructor.
"As a coach, you go so much more into just teaching that axle or just teaching that spin. You're teaching these kids lifelong lessons that they may not realize they're learning at the time".
How's that for irony.
