WAIMEA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Officials with the Hawaii Police Department are advising motorists to avoid Mamalahoa Highway near Puu Nani Street at the 54 mile marker due to a traffic accident.
The road was reportedly closed in both directions after a truck and trailer struck a utility pole, according to sources at the scene. Power and utility lines were scattered across the roadway after the accident.
Big Island officials say the accident will require a detour in traffic for the next five hours.
