LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Strong surf along Hawaii's south shores caused three boats to capsize Friday near Maui's Mala Wharf.
Shortly after 10:40 a.m., fire fighters say they found the grounded sailboats within a quarter mile stretch of coastline from Mala Wharf to the Lahaina Crossroads Apartments.
All three vessels, each about 30 to 40 ft. long, had pulled from their moorings and were being battered by the unusually high surf conditions. Ocean Safety Rescue crews searched the water and boats for any sign of people and found no one. Witnesses say the boats appeared to be empty when they broke free.
Officials with the Department of Land and Natural Resources are now looking into the incident.
