First look at Oprah's organic Maui farm

WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The "O" in Oprah could now stand for 'Organic.' "O Magazine' is giving readers an exclusive look at her new Maui farm for the June issue.

There are more than 100 species of fruits, vegetables and herbs growing there. One acre is producing 145 pounds of food each week, with the help of a Hawaii natural resource management group called Bio-Logical Capital.

We talked with Bio-Logical Capital Senior Vice President Guy Kaulukukui by phone from California. He told us, " Right now, the bounty is food for table for herself and guests. Farmers take food home now. The farm has been fantastic. With that kind of bounty, we'll be able to have something for Maui soon."

The TV mogul registered trademarks with the State last year for the brands "Oprah's Organics" and "Oprah's Harvest."

While it may seem a world away from her life in front of cameras, her new business actually takes her back to her roots. Oprah says creating her dream farm in Kula is like "coming home, a full circle moment because she grew up with a grandmother who was growing things" in Mississippi.

She planned what to plant with the help of her longtime trainer and friend Bob Greene. It's their way to give back to the land and to Maui, and to break the Islands' dependence on imported food.

According to Kaulukukui, "We face a large problem of shipping 90 percent of our food. What she's really doing is providing an example. Of course on a large scale, but the idea is we can all do something to become self reliant on food in Hawaii."

The farm is a metaphor for Oprah's philosophy on life-- to plant a seed, nurture it, and reap the fruits of your labor. A bounty that will be expanded to 16 acres, and likely soon be shared with the community.
