WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A boat exploded at the Ala Wai small boat harbor Monday morning, sending a man to the hospital.

Three people were on the 43-foot long fiberglass sport yacht when the explosion occurred at about 9:20 a.m. Two people escaped unharmed, but a man in his 50s is in serious condition, according to EMS officials.

They told investigators that moments before the explosion, they were using small gasoline containers to fill the boat so they could take it out for a ride.

The Coast Guard and Dept. of Land and Natural Resources are helping with the investigation into the cause.

Investigators say the blast caused about $100,000 in damage.
