HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A mental health patient accused of stabbing his caretaker in Waipahu made his initial appearance at Honolulu District Court Wednesday.

Jonathan Laronal, Jr. is charged with attempted murder. His caretaker says the 44-year-old suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Investigators say the victim was sleeping in the living room of a care home on Apowale Street, when the suspect attacked him with a six-inch steak knife for no apparent reason. Oscar Anunciacion, 55, was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital.

According to a police affidavit, Anunciacion suffered puncture wounds to his chest and back, and lacerations to his head and hands.

Laronal remains in custody, unable to post $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is tentatively set for Friday.
