HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Runoff from heavy rain has prompted state health officials to issue a Brown Water Advisory for Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii.

The State Health Department said people should stay out of flood waters and storm water runoff because of the possibility of overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter and dead animals. Health officials also said the water could also contain pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris.

They warned that if coastal waters are turbid and brown, stay out.
