Former state representative Alex Santiago has announced that he's running to represent Leeward Oahu on the Honolulu City Council.
The seat is currently held by Tom Berg, who has been criticized for incidents that happened last month, including what some described as unruly behavior at a Waipahu Neighborhood Board meeting. A Honolulu Police report also said Berg was "argumentative and irrational" toward Secret Service agents at an incident during President Obama's APEC summit reception at the Hale Koa Hotel.
"I think it is safe to say that I have not been satisfied with the type of representation we've been having," Santiago said. "It's not just a matter of style. It's a matter of effectiveness, having passion and knowing how to direct that."
In a statement, Berg said, "We had 14 candidates vying for this seat last go-around, and the more candidates we get debating the issues and offering voters choices is the way to go. As for Alex specifically, I encourage his participation in the process even though we are on opposite ends of the spectrum."
