KAHUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new bike path is bringing two Windward communities together ahead of schedule. On Saturday, hundreds flocked to Malaekahana to celebrate the new 1.5 mile bike and pedestrian path.

The Envision Laie project that connects Laie and Kahuku was slated to open in April, but volunteers finished it up a couple weeks early.

Verla Moore, a resident in the area expressed, "I think it's great. I see people using it to and from school already. We hope to get more of our community out."

One of the volunteers, Junior Ahyou explained his satisfaction in the project, "I have tears in my eyes coming here and working, knowing that I'm doing something good. To see these ladies with their babies, grandmothers, grandfathers walking the path, it makes me very happy that I was a very small part of it."

The project compliments the Honolulu Bicycle Path Master Plan, for bicycle friendly neighborhoods.
