Hawaii Sports Profiles: Mat McBriar

In 2006 and 2007, Mat McBriar became the highest paid punter in the NFL, in a 5 year contract for $8.5 mil. Today he is the second highest paid punter, making his second Pro Bowl appearance this year. Mat attended the University of Hawaii where he had the second-best career punting average for Hawaii (42.22 yards/punts) behind Jason Elam. He graduated in 2003 and though we know he is originally from Australia he says that he is from Hawaii, his home away from home.

The aloha spirit is what players who have passed through the UH program can't help but feel when they experience Hawaii. And when they go on to bigger challenges, in Mat's case, making a career in the NFL first with the Denver Broncos in 2003, to the Seattle Seahawks, and on to the Dallas Cowboys --  he still appreciates his time in the islands. It is a testament to Hawaii's welcoming atmosphere, the people, the fans, the environment that UH Sports creates for all of its student athletes. Mat's experience is one that he will never forget.  By the way, Mat is one of three Australians to play in the NFL and all are punters. The UH currently has two student athletes who are from Australia.
