HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Have you been watching the new Hawaii Five-0 lately? If so, you've probably seen Alex O'Loughlin's abs.

But working out isn't the only thing he does when he's away from the cameras. I got the chance to talk with him about his new role, and his new life here in Hawaii.

Kicking in doors to find an assassin. It's just a regular day on the job for lieutenant commander Steve McGarrett.

Shoot out with a trained killer? No problem for this star of Hawaii Five-0.

Alex O'Loughlin's character is an intense ex-Navy seal who is perfect.

Well, almost.

But that just makes McGarrett all the more endearing, not too different from the actor Alex O'Loughlin.

We caught up with him on a rainy day near Honolulu Harbor.

"It's similar to Australia in a lot of ways. It's very laid back here and there is a beach culture which I'm used to being from Sydney," O'Loughlin said. "It's raining on my face right. No, it's quite refreshing. I quite like it."

Quite the nature lover, Alex says he tries to eat healthy and often eats poke.

Or hangs out on Monsarrat.

"I'm still discovering cool little places like bars and restaurants. There's a great place I go to a lot called the diamond head health bar which is good food and acai bowls," O'Loughlin said.

Alex has picked up surfing since he moved to Honolulu and is man enough to admit the recent big wave action is intimidating.

"The North Shore has been ridiculous and getting up into the 20's. I will never surf that. I have no desire to be a part of that because I'll die. And that will be it," O'Loughlin said.

"And if the waves don't get you the sharks will," Grace said.

"Yeah that's exactly right. I'm sitting back and watching and think it's amazing. I learned to surf when I came here. So four months ago. So I'm surfing stuff that's as high as me and when a wave comes with a six foot face, I'm like oh my god okay okay. And everyone is like kook. I love it. I love it," O'Loughlin said.

"So you lose that tough guy image in the water?" Grace asked.

"Totally totally, there is nothing tough about me," O'Loughlin said.

But he does play it tough when it comes to the bad guys, and he loves to provoke his partner Danno.

After shooting an exhausting MMA style fight, he took time out to joke with me.

"So tell me when you're ready," O'Loughlin said.

"I'm ready," Grace said.

"So what was your experience watching an actor/stuntman go through pain?" O'Loughlin asked.

"You know what? It was exhausting. I couldn't believe how tired I am after watching you guys do this all day," Grace said.

"Me too," O'Loughlin said.

O'Loughlin also had some fun with Ellen making comparisons to the old McGarrett.

Whether it's a shirtless McGarrett driving ratings or the action scenes full of explosions, we'll high-five to all of the above.
