High surf advisory posted for north and west shores

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A high surf advisory has been issued for the north shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui, and the west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii, through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, surf along the north shores of the smaller islands will be 18 to 22 feet (face heights) Sunday night and Monday. West facing shores of Niihau, Kauai and Oahu could have waves of 12 to 18 feet Sunday night and Monday, while surf along west shores of the Big Island is expected to rise to six to ten feet late Sunday and Monday.

A high surf advisory also means that the large waves could produce rip currents and localized beach erosion.
