Hawaii to receive more than $80M in federal funding for storm recovery
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) announced Thursday Hawai‘i is receiving nearly $81.4 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to cover costs from recent disasters.
The funds will go toward repairs to roads, bridges and other structures that were flooded and damaged during the Kona low storms from earlier this year.
“This new federal funding will help repair storm-damaged roads and structures as recovery from this year’s historic flooding continues,” Schatz said. “We’re going to keep working to deliver federal resources so that affected communities can get back on their feet.”
A senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Schatz has led efforts urging federal support for Hawai‘i’s recovery from the Kona low storms and subsequent hurricanes this year, including by speaking to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
In addition to the funding, the Hawai‘i DOT also received $2.3 million from the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief Program to repair bridges on Kaua‘i damaged by flooding in 2020.
