A person at the school shot and killed the shooter, the chief said. Police did not release the shooter’s name or age Thursday.

Later in the evening, CNN reported the shooter was a 16-year-old boy.

Police said initially at least two people were taken to a hospital, including a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher.

The reunification site for families was at Journey Church, 61303 S Highway 97 near Goodwill and Dairy Queen. Families of students were asked to go there.

City, school and state officials, including the governor, condemned the violence and offered condolences and support to the families and the Bend community.

“We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing. Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders.”

Sen. Ron Wyden also issued a statement Thursday saying his heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones.
