HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police are investigating three separate motorcycle crashes, including one fatal, that happened within a three-hour time span on Monday morning.

In Hilo, a man died after a crash on Mamalahoa Highway.

Investigators said around 7:30 a.m., a motorcycle was traveling north on Mamalahoa Highway near the intersection of Hau Street when it crashed into a Honda sedan that was making a U-turn.

The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

He has not been identified yet.

The driver of the sedan, a 63-year-old woman, was hospitalized for minor head injuries but was later released.

Officials believe inattention may have led to the crash and are still investigating whether alcohol or drugs are involved.

Minutes later, police responded to a crash in North Kona that critically injured a 57-year-old motorcyclist.

Police said the motorcyclist struck a pickup truck near the intersection of Kaiminani Drive and Ili Ili Street.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time, police said.

About three hours later, another motorcyclist struck a van that was stopped at the intersection of Mamaki Street and Highway 11 in Hilo.

The motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition, where he remained hospitalized.

The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Police are investigating the crash as negligent injury.
