Investigators suspect alcohol as factor in crash that killed pedestrian on Maui

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police said a 46-year-old pedestrian has died after he was struck by a truck along Honoapiilani Highway in Wailuku on Thursday night.

Authorities said the man was killed while either walking or running on the right paved shoulder of the northbound lane at about 8:30 p.m. Officials said the truck swerved out of its lane, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the 57-year-old truck driver was arrested. He’s accused of negligent homicide and driving under the influence.

Upon preliminary investigation, police said alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Neither the victim nor the suspect have been identified at this point.

This is the ninth traffic fatality of 2022 in Maui County compared to two at the same time last year.
