HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police are investigating after a man allegedly snatched a young girl off a Waikiki sidewalk in broad daylight and tried to sexually assault her in some nearby bushes.

It happened about 1 p.m. Thursday outside a busy hotel at Fort DeRussy.

Law enforcement sources say the 15-year-old girl was walking near the intersection of Kalia and Maluhia roads when she was reportedly grabbed by a stranger and pulled into the bushes.

Sources says the suspect allegedly opened his pants and tried to assault her but the girl managed to escape and flagged down an officer for help.

Those who frequent the area were alarmed to learn what happened.

“Nobody should have to go through that,” said Laquandria Bradley.

Maya Echtinaw added, “I’m really surprised.”

“I feel like this is a relatively safe area,” said Sophia McGrath.

It’s a place with plenty of traffic and where sidewalks are often crowded with visitors. HPD confirms officers searched the area for the suspect but didn’t find him.

HNN asked for a description of the man but police have yet to provide that information.

Meanwhile, those staying nearby say they’re not taking any chances with their safety.

“Just being hyper-aware of my surroundings,” said Laquarion Bradley. “I’m glad we’re partnered up. Me and my sister.”

Echtinaw added, “Obviously, you have to keep an eye out in general. But that just makes me want to continue being careful. Being more cautious going forward.”
