KIHEI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two people were killed early Sunday morning in a tragic crash on Maui.

Police said it happened around 4:05 a.m. on North Kihei Road, about two miles southeast of Honoapiilani Highway in Kihei.

Investigators found that a 21-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 2020 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck heading southeast. He drifted onto the shoulder of the road and slammed into the rear of a white 2003 Nissan Sentra which was parked.

The impact of that crash killed the 47-year- old woman and a 52-year-old man who were asleep within the car. They were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.

Victims of the crash haven’t yet been publicly identified.

An investigation is working to uncover if speed, drugs, and alcohol played factors.

According to police, this is Maui County’s seventh and eighth traffic fatality of 2022, compared to one at the same time last year.
