Hawaii Island police seek information, witnesses after 45 headstones damaged

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police are seeking information or witnesses regarding a recent vandalism incident at a cemetery in Ninole.

Authorities said 45 headstones at the Honohina Hongwanji Cemetery on the Hamakua Coast were damaged.

Volunteer caretakers said they discovered the damage when they arrived to do maintenance on Tuesday. Investigators said the vandalism happened sometime between Sunday and Tuesday.

Caretakers said many of the headstones and monuments date back to the early 1900s.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the police department’s non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311.

Police said up to a $1,000 reward may be given for any tips that lead to an arrest.
