‘It was like an oven’: Good Samaritan describes pulling elderly man from raging house fire

Bystander saves man's life from raging house fire

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Firefighters extinguished a raging house fire in Kalihi on Monday afternoon that nearly claimed a man’s life.

The fire was reported about noon at 907 Winant St.

When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting from the house and spreading to nearby structures.

In addition the home where the fire started, at least two other homes sustained damage. The fire also damaged a vehicle.

A good Samaritan, who identified himself as Takeo, said he was cutting grass in the area when the fire started and rush to see if anyone needed help.

When he kicked the door of the home open, he saw an elderly man lying on the ground, apparently overcome by smoke. “I grabbed him and pulled him from the house,” he said.

“I could feel the heat. It was like being in an oven.”

After pulling the man to safety, the good Samaritan rushed back inside to make sure no one was inside. He said he barely made it out before the house started to collapse.

“I know God had one purpose. I’m just glad I was able to help the guy,” he said.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.

No one was injured in the incident.
