HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Heavy rains caused roughly 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater to overflow in East Honolulu Wednesday night.

The sewage overflow was caused by a pump station error at a manhole on Kalanianaole Highway.

The Department of Environmental Services recovered 500 gallons of sewage, but the remaining 4,500 gallons entered a nearby stream.

ENV responded to the sanitary sewer overflow at around 8:15 p.m. and stopped the overflow at 8:50 p.m.

The state Department of Health was notified and has waived taking water samples.

ENV cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the affected area.

Warning signs were posted Thursday.
