HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police say a driver was speeding before he flipped his jeep in a fatal crash on Hawaii Island.

It happened Saturday afternoon around 4:15 p.m. at the Makuu Drive and 2nd avenue intersection.

An investigation showed the driver of a 2020 Jeep Wrangler struck a utility pole after crossing the center line.

Police say he was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. First responders found him unresponsive at the scene and transported him to Hilo Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators are looking into whether alcohol or drugs also placed a role.

As of Monday, the man hadn’t yet been identified.
