HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 69-year-old man was hospitalized after a pedestrian crash on Kauai Friday afternoon.
Officials say around 4:50 p.m., a 26-year-old man behind the wheel of a Toyota multi-purpose vehicle was heading south on Kuhio Highway near Niu Street when he hit the man.
Authorities say the pedestrian was attempting to cross the street in a marked crosswalk.
The elderly victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment. He was later medevaced to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where he remained in critical condition Saturday.
The crash shut down the highway and rerouted traffic for two hours.
“Speed does not appear to be a factor. However, toxicology reports are pending to determine if there was any impairment on the driver’s part,” officials said.
Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Officer Shawn Hanna at 241-1615.
