HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu’s Medical Examiner has publicly identified the man killed in Friday’s crash on Nimitz Highway.
Officials named him as 42-year-old Lance Watarai of Waipahu.
According to police, the crash happened around 11:40 a.m. Watarai was on a moped heading west when he lost control and collided with a metal street light.
The crash shut down multiple lanes of the highway near the onramp to the H-1 Freeway. It’s unclear if alcohol, speed or drugs played a factor.
HPD said this was Oahu’s third traffic fatality of 2021, compared to zero this time last year.
