HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Big Island Interscholastic Federation joins the OIA and MIL, announcing the cancellation of all fall and winter sports because of circumstances surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The decision — first reported by the Hawaii Tribune-Herald — was made Thursday night following a meeting of the BIIF executive board and all of the school’s Athletic directors.
In a release to the Tribune-Herald, BIIF officials say they “considered many factors in this decision.”
The affected sports include:
- Air riflery
- Cross country
- Canoe paddling
- Girls volleyball
- Swimming and diving
- Junior varsity softball
- Junior varsity baseball
A decision has not been made in regards to the BIIF’s spring sports, which are slated to begin on March 1st — these sports were the first to be affected by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
The dominoes began to fall after the HHSAA’s decision to cancel nine of their state championships on January 2nd, fast forward to January 5th and the OIA dropped their fall and winter sports, followed by the MIL on January 6th.
