HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Just after 8 a.m. on January 13, 2018, an emergency message was sent to cell phones across the state alerting residents that a ballistic missile was inbound.
It read: “Seek shelter immediately: This is not a drill.”
Over the next 38 minutes ― the period of time it took for the state to send out a follow-up message letting residents know the missile alert was mistakenly sent out ― people panicked.
Some took shelter in storm drains, old fallout shelters and even their closets. Others called family members on the mainland to tearfully say their goodbyes.
Nearly three years later, HNN is premiering a new documentary ― “This is Not a Drill” ― that looks back at a day most anyone who experienced it will never forget. After the film, stick around for exclusive interviews with its producers as well as several residents who were featured in it.
“This is Not a Drill” premiered exclusively on HNN’s digital platforms last week and on air on Sunday night. Watch it on HNN’s website, news app or on streaming platforms Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire.
