HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii’s own Max Holloway is looking to get the ‘Blessed Express’ back on track with a main event match up against fellow featherweight top contender Calvin Kattar in January.
The UFC announced on Tuesday that Holloway (21-6) versus Kattar (22-4) will headline the first UFC event of 2021, with details about location and broadcast plans not yet announced.
This will be The Waianae native’s first non-title fight in five years, after holding the featherweight title from 2016 until December of 2019, when Alexander Volkanovski won by unanimous decision at UFC 245 to take the belt, and Volkanovski retained the belt back in July by split decision in their controversial rematch at UFC 251.
The main event bout will not have a championship on the line, but the winner puts themselves in a good position for a title shot, ESPN has Holloway as the No. 2 ranked fighter in the division, while Kattar is ranked at No. 6 after his recent victory over fellow Hawaii boy David Ige back in July.
It’s been a big day for Holloway, in addition to the fight announcement, Holloway announced that he got engaged on Tuesday morning to his girlfriend, pro surfer Alessa Quizon.
