City will offer free modified Summer Fun program, but space is limited

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The city will offer a free modified Summer Fun program for at least 3,600 kids on Oahu in July.

The popular program will be held from July 1 to July 28.

Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced the program Tuesday, saying that it’s designed as a resource for families as parents head back to work.

Parents won’t line up for spots in the program as they typically do.

Instead, the city is offering a website to register kids. To sign up, click here.

Registration for districts 3 and 4 (including Central Oahu, the Leeward Coast and the North Shore) will open June 18 at 6 p.m. Registration for districts 1 and 2 will open June 20 at 9 a.m.

Summer Fun employees and children will have to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. Instead of larger classes, groups will be limited to 12 children each.

The city’s Summer Fun program typically has space for about 10,000 kids.

The mayor said the city is looking for more “senior leaders” to be able to offer space to more children.
