HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The family of a 13-year-old girl paralyzed by a fall from a Maui condo is suing the apartment’s owners, managers and a vacation rental company.
The girl’s family was staying on the sixth floor in the Kauhale Makai condo in Kihei two years ago when she stepped on a bed near a window. It rolled back and she fell through the screen.
Attorneys say these accidents happen far too often, despite available inexpensive preventive measures.
“We hope that one of the outcomes of this case is kind of a notice loud and clear to all of the vacation rentals all the hotels that this is a problem,” the family’s attorney Mark Davis said.
Davis says about 80 people a year are injured in Hawaii from falls from windows. That’s about double the national average.
