HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police have classified a brush fire that snarled traffic in East Oahu on Tuesday as arson.
Police said witnesses saw a man with a disposable lighter in his hand where the brush fire started around 11:15 a.m.
Police later arrested the man, identified as 21-year-old Ryder Riveira, on suspicion of second-degree arson. He has since been released pending investigation.
Some 33 firefighters battled the fire, which burned roughly 4 acres. It was extinguished by 1 p.m.
During the firefight, authorities closed westbound lanes at the Hawaii Kai Golf Course and turned eastbound traffic around at Kealahou Street.
The blaze snarled traffic on Kalanianaole Highway for a few hours.
