MAUI, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) -Maui police have identified a man who drove off the Manawainui Gulch Wednesday morning.
Police say 57-year-old John Smith of Kaupo was killed when he lost control in a curve, and his truck plunged 200 feet down off the cliff.
He died at the scene. It happened around 7:45 a.m. just west of the Manawainui Bridge.
Police added that Smith was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
The investigation is ongoing to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were involved.
This is Maui County’s 12th traffic death of the year. Last year during this time, there were five deaths.
