Retiring Big Island ukulele teacher gets sweet surprise

Students honor retiring Big Island teacher

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Students from Waiakea Intermediate School surprised ukulele teacher George Camarillo Jr. with a sweet sendoff into retirement Tuesday night.

The middle and high school students performed hula and songs on their ukuleles as they celebrated Camarillo’s 30 years of teaching.

Camarillo had just returned from his last trip with his students as they performed at the Pan-Pacific Festival on Oahu.

“It’s important as he travels that our kids learn that they also pass a little bit of our culture on to other islands, other states, or even other countries,” said Porsche Leopoldino, a member of the band booster club.

Camarillo took over for his father, who started the Ukulele program in 1970.
