MAUI, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two men were arrested after Maui police broke up a cockfighting ring in Puunene over the weekend.
Officers with the department’s Vice Division Gambling & Morals Unit executed the crackdown near the area of the Hawaiian Cement quarry off Kaimana Road around 6 p.m. Saturday.
Police said about 100 people had gathered and were watching a cockfight in progress. Police observed two men engaging in the act of chicken fighting by pitting two gamecocks against each other. The birds were fitted with cockfighting weapons.
The two men were arrested and charged with second degree cruelty to animals and possession of a gambling device.
Police identified them as 44-year-old Shannon Mollena of Wailuku, and 50-year-old Marino Oliveros of Kahului.
Their bail has been set at $400 each.
