Hawaii gives up early lead in loss to UC Santa Barbara

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Rainbow Warrior baseball team fell to UC Santa Barbara 8-2 Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

The loss was the first home game for Hawaii (20-25, 8-11 BWC) since April 20th. The ‘Bows took an early lead going up 1-0 thanks to Ethan Lopez before the Gauchos took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning.

The lead stretched to 8-1 with four runs for the Gauchos in the ninth. Hawaii starting pitcher Cade Smith went 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Kash Koltermann followed with 4.1 innings with three hits and two runs with three strikeouts.

UCSB's Ben Brecht pitched 6.0 innings with one run on four hits to pick up the win.

Game 2 of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday, May 18 at 6:35 p.m. HT at Les Murakami Stadium.
