PEARL CITY (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 17-year-old girl was critically injured while walking in a Pearl City crosswalk late Tuesday, Honolulu police said.

Police said around 9 p.m., a 49-year-old man was driving his vehicle southbound on Waimano Home Road and overtook another vehicle that was stopped in traffic. As he approached Kuahaka Street, he struck the girl, who was walking across the street.

The girl was rushed to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition.

HPD Lt. James Slayter said this crash underscores the need for drivers to be aware of their surroundings and to be cautious.

“Anytime you’re in a residential neighborhood, you’re in an area where you know there’s pedestrian traffic, there’s foot traffic, as a driver, if you see a vehicle slowing down in the right lane, you need to take precaution and figure, maybe that vehicle is slowing down for a reason," Slayter said. “Maybe there’s a pedestrian up ahead.”

All southbound lanes of Waimano Home Road were closed between Komo Mai Drive and Kauhaka Street, but lanes have since been reopened.

It does not appear that speed, drugs, or alcohol are involved, police said.

Police are still investigating.
