MAKENA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Ocean safety personnel and medics stayed busy on Maui responding to two separate incidents over the weekend.

Around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Maui’s Department of Fire & Public Safety said crews were dispatched to a beach in Kaupo Maui.

There, a 6-year-old girl reportedly hit her head while swimming, and got rolled around in the surf.

A family member rushed to grab the girl and pulled her to safety.

Fire fighters arrived on scene and assessed the child. She was alert while being treated by personnel.

She was later hospitalized. Her condition is not yet known.

Then on Saturday around 12:30 p.m., a man was injured at Big Beach in Makena, Maui.

Lifeguards say they warned the 27-year-old about dangerous conditions in the water before he went out.

He was body boarding when he was slammed by a large wave.

“Lifeguards witnessed the beachgoer go from the top of the 8ft face wave to the bottom, injuring his lower back," officials said in a news release.

He was pulled from the water and taken to an awaiting ambulance.

His condition was not listed.
