HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii physical therapist was sentenced to 42 months behind bars Thursday for scamming nearly $4 million from insurers and the federal government.

Prosecutors said Garrett Okubo, 52, submitted false claims for physical therapy services to TRICARE, Medicare, Medicaid and HMSA.

He also falsely claimed he personally provided physical therapy services to clients, but actually had his unlicensed staff members do it.

And he inflated the amount of time patients were treated.

Prosecutors said some 70 percent of Okubo’s total billings over six years were fraudulent.

In addition to serving 42 months behind bars, Okubo must pay $3.7 million in restitution and serve three years of supervised release.
