Wahine water polo team falls to Golden Bears in first round of NCAA tournament

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The No. 5 Rainbow Wahine water polo team saw their NCAA Tournament championship aspirations come to an end this morning, losing to No. 4 California. 17-13, in the quarterfinals at Stanford University.

Hawaii (18-6) once led 3-1 in the first quarter before going into halftime tied 8-8. However, the Golden Bears (17-8) pulled away in the third quarter, going up 11-8 before ending the period leading 13-11. In the fourth, California scored four goals over the final eight minutes of the match to put the game on ice.

Senior Elyse Lemay-Lavoie led the offensive attack for the 'Bows, tying a career high with six goals on the day.

In the cage, sophomore Molly DiLalla tallied three saves, before freshman Bridget Layburn recorded one save to close the game.

Alba Bonamusa Boix and Maxine Schaap also scored two goals apiece for Hawaii.
