HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaiian Airlines is planning to restart service from Honolulu to Fukuoka, Japan.

The company said Tuesday they were awaiting government approvals in the U.S. and Japan to launch four weekly flights between HNL and the Fukuoka Airport on the island of Kyushu.

Flights could begin as early as November of this year.

“We are eager to bring travelers in Fukuoka and throughout Kyushu our warm Hawaiian hospitality along with the convenience of non-stop flights to Hawaii,” said Theo Panagiotoulias, senior vice president for global sales and alliances at Hawaiian Airlines. “Japan is a special place to Hawaiian and Hawaii, and we are excited to make both island chains more accessible for our guests.”

In 2014, the airline suspended its Fukuoka service after two years due to declining passenger counts.

Service to Fukuoka would expand customers’ options to Japan with the airliner. Hawaiian already offers direct flights to and from Haneda and Narita in Tokyo, and Osaka and Sapporo.
