HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Rainbow Wahine softball team took care of business against UC Riverside today in their doubleheader, winning 9-1 in Game 1 and 4-1 in Game 2 at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hawaii (30-13, 11-4 Big West) hit seven total home runs on the day, five coming in the first game en route to a 9-1 win in five innings.
Senior Brittany Hitchcock earned her second complete game win of the series to improve to 16-7 overall and 8-2 in the Big West. She allowed just one run on three hits with zero walks and two strikeouts.
Nicole Lopez, Alyssa Sojka, Madison Veldman, Brittnee Rossi and Jenna Kumabe each hit home runs for the ‘Bows en route to a convincing victory.
In Game 2, however, Hawaii’s offense wasn’t as explosive.
The Highlanders took an early lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI-single from Sami Denyon before Cheeks Ramos tied things home with a solo-shot to leftfield in the fourth.
Freshman pitcher Izzy Dino got the start and threw the first 4.1 innings for the Wahine before Hitchcock took over after Dino gave up eight hits.
Both teams went into extra innings tied at 1-1 before Callee Heen hit a walk-off three-run home run over the centerfield fence to end the game and the series. The homer was Heen's 14th of the season, tying her career-high.
The Wahine head to California for their final road trip of the season as they take on CSUN. The two teams will play a single game on May 3th and a doubleheader on May 4th.
