HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - And still.
Ilima-Lei Macfarlane defended her Bellator women’s flyweight title Saturday night against Veta Arteaga, winning via third round TKO (doctor’s stoppage) in San Jose, California.
Over the first two rounds, Macfarlane found herself on her back eating elbows from Arteaga who, arguably, was ahead on the scorecards after the first 10 minutes of action.
In the third, Macfarlane found herself in Arteaga’s guard and decided to return the favor with some elbows of her own, one of which landed flush on the challenger's forehead which opened a gruesome cut that made the referee intervene.
Ultimately, the cageside doctor called the fight after examining the cut and Macfarlane (10-0,, 9-0 BMMA) was ruled the winner.
In her post-fight interview, Macfarlane credited Arteaga’s performance and called for an immediate rematch despite the win. The former Punahou graduate has now defended her Bellator three times and is 9-0 inside the Bellator cage.
