HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hilo transfer station was evacuated and closed for about 40 minutes Thursday after a grenade was spotted in the area.

Authorities subsequently determined the device wasn’t functioning and couldn’t detonate.

The device was found on the roadway at the front of one of the dumpsters at the site.

It’s not clear how it ended up there.
