HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - University of Hawaiʻi senior women’s water polo player Irene Gonzalez earned Big West Player of the Week, it was announced on Wednesday.
Hawaiʻi (11-2), is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the CWPA National Poll, and the team went 4-1 last week largely due in part to Gonzalez’s offensive success.
The All-American has tallied 13 goals, seven assists and nine steals in UH’s five games through the 2019 season. She tied a career high with six goals in UH’s 14-6 win over No. 10 Pacific on Sunday.
In a near defeat to No. 4 Cal, Gonzalez registered five goals to lead the the Rainbow Wahine, in the near upset before falling 12-10.
This is the second time Gonzalez has won the award this season and the fourth time in her career. The Rainbow Wahine are back in action on March 9 for the Big West opener at UC Davis.
