WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An attempted murder investigation is underway after a military service member was shot early Wednesday during alleged bar brawl in Waipahu, Honolulu police say.
Police responded shortly after midnight to the incident on Leoku Street.
According to officials, the victim was reportedly arguing with a “group of local men” at a bar off of Waipahu Street when the confrontation spilled out into the parking lot and began to escalate.
Police say that’s when the victim and two others jumped into a SUV and were attempting to drive away when shots were fired at them.
Detectives say at least one bullet struck the victim.
He has not been identified, but police on the scene say he was immediately driven to Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu in critical condition. Hawaii News Now has learned his injuries are not life-threatening.
Detectives have found 9mm casings on the ground, and it appears several parked cars were hit by stray bullets.
HPD is still searching for suspects. So far, no one has been arrested.
