HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Next time you need to renew your motor vehicle registration, city officials are hoping you skip the DMV’s long lines and wait times, and head to the grocery store instead.
The city unveiled the DMV Now self-service kiosk Tuesday, which is now available at four Safeway supermarkets on Oahu.
Officials say motor vehicle transactions account for 70 percent of their transactions, and they hope the machines will help reduce DMV lines.
"Your certificate and your decal come right out of this machine," said Sheri Kajiwara, Department of Customer Services Director. "It's going to be the exact same thing that you would receive at the counter."
To use the kiosk, you can scan the bar code on your renewal notice or just type in your license plate number and zip code. You must pay with a credit or debit card, and your document prints out instantly.
Because the machines are located inside Safeway stores (Oahu: Kapahulu, Beretania, Kaneohe, and Waimalu), they're available for use 24/7.
"Regardless of your schedule, whatever you have going on, you can come into the store at any time and have your vehicle registration taken care of," said George Glukfeld, general manager of Safeway Hawaii.
Shoppers say they're excited to test them out.
"It's definitely going to make things a little more convenient," said Kapahulu resident Thomas Felix-Neal. "It's just right down the street from where I live and I don't have to go search out a DMV or wait in a long line."
The self-service kiosks will be up and running in every county statewide this week.
On Oahu, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell says the city is covering the processing and service fees for customers. Fees may apply on neighbor islands.
The city launched online registration back in 2000, but says people were still missing the deadline to renew online.
Caldwell hopes to expand this new option to two more stores by the end of the month.
“We’re going to roll it out here, see how it works, and see what happens to the lines at our satellite city halls,” said Caldwell.
