HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police officers in Maui County have arrested a 66-year-old Pukalani man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run motor vehicle accident that occurred on Saturday.

County officials say a 71-year-old man was walking on the makai shoulder lane of Makani Road in Makawao at around 7 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the westbound direction.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Authorities say the vehicle involved in the crash did not stop after the collision and fled the scene before officers responded.

A short time later, according to police, the vehicle was found in the Pukalani area and the driver was placed under arrest.

The suspect was booked and released, pending further investigation.

Earlier Saturday morning, a man believed to have been walking in one of the lanes of traffic on Maui Veteran’s Highway was struck and killed by a motorist.

The accidents were Maui County’s fourth and fifth fatal traffic accidents of the year.
