HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Rainbow Wahine softball team split their double-header Friday night with an 8- win over UT Arlington followed by a 7-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Against UT Arlington, Hawaii jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after the first inning before the ‘Bows conceded seven-straight runs over the next six innings of play.
Brittnee Rossi saved the day for the Wahine in the seventh with an RBI-double to drive in Nicole Lopez and pinch runner Bree Soma for the 8-7 win.
Freshman pitcher Ashley Murphy and earned the win in relief in her first collegiate appearance.
Against the Bruins, however, Hawaii struggled.
Bruins pitcher Rachel Garcia showed why she is the reigning National Player of the Year with a one-hit shutout, recording 15 strikeouts.
UCLA took the early lead on a two-run home run off the bat of Aaliyah Jordan in the second inning followed by three runs on an error and a two run home run by Colleen Sullivan in the fourth.
Brittany Hitchcock took the loss dropping her record to 1-1. She allowed five runs on four hits in three-and-a-thirds innings pitched.
The Hawai’i Paradise Classic will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 9. Hawaii takes on St. Mary’s at 3 pm. HT.
