HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Heads up, drivers: Parking on the street is about to get much pricier.
Come Monday, rates for smart parking meters in the urban core will double to $3 an hour. Affected zones for the smart parking meter increases include Chinatown, Downtown, the Civic Center and much of Waikiki.
Meanwhile, the city is also doubling hourly rates for parking meters outside of the urban core ― to $1.50 an hour. Coin-operated meter upgrades to reflect the new rate will happen in four phases through early March.
The city expects more than $4 million a year in extra revenue thanks to the rate hikes.
Additionally, the city will lengthen parking meter enforcement hours in Waikiki. Signs will be replaced Sunday reflecting the new hours ― 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (The current enforcement hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
The City Council approved the new rates in 2017. The aim: To better manage parking needs in the urban core.
Higher hourly rates are designed to ensure that more people are using on-street parking for shorter periods.
